Sermon on the Mount, Part 13: Jesus About Judging Others. In this portion of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus highlights our tendency is to minimize our sins and amplify the sins of others.

“Why do look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3, NIV).

The image that Jesus paints highlights our tendency is to minimize our sins and amplify the sins of others. We give the judgment of charity to ourselves and not to others. We interpret our own sins in the best possible light and the sins of others in the worst possible way.

In this passage (Matthew 7:1-6), however, Jesus instructs Believers not to adopt a judgmental or critical spirit because it will destroy relationships and tear down the Christian community. Let’s seek to put this important aspect of Christian behavior into action this week.

In the early ’60s, the Assemblies of God church of Canoga Park planted a new church in Simi Valley. The gatherings were held in a home on the east end of the valley until the house-church purchased the property at 171 Royal Avenue. Over the decades we have seen God move in powerful ways, transform lives, and the future looks bright!

We are taking intentional steps to meet the needs of a post-Christian world that is embedded in a postmodern cultural context. We believe the Gospel is “the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” and are committed to living for Jesus in a secular world while loving people with the love of Christ (Romans 1:16).
